The .303 British cartridge is in-between the 7.62x39mm and the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge with regard to terminal ballistics, but its level of effectiveness is much closer to the 7.62x51mm than the 7.62x39mm.
Older military surplus firearms chambered for this cartridge, such as the Enfield series, can be purchased for about 1/4 the cost of a quality modern bolt action rifle. Precision and durability of such guns are usually outstanding and as such, these guns represent a great value as a first or only-firearm.
