The .44 Magnum is a handgun cartridge that offers terminal ballistics in the neighborhood of small rifles and actually exceeds the terminal effectiveness of an M-16, when fired from a 4" or longer barrel handgun.
While the recoil of the magnum cartridge is of concern, when fired from a heavy revolver, they are well within the range of control of a moderately experienced pistol shooter. To form an analogy of this cartridge that a shotgun shooter will appreciate - It is to a 12 gauge what a .40S&W is to a 20 gauge, it will kick more than a full-size service handgun, but it is easily controlled with practice.
