The .223 Remington is commercially popular as a varmint hunting and target shooting round, but has always been considered a viable defensive rifle cartridge, by those who feel rifles are defensive firearms.
With the usage of limited expansion bullets or solid bullets, the .223 Remington can easily meet FBI penetration standards in ballistic gelatin and can be classified as adequate for deer-sized game animals. Good bullet choices in this caliber are bonded core and Partition-type bullets - penetration is greatly reduced by the usage of 'exploding' varmint bullets and military FMJ bullets (which usually break into pieces at the crimping area on the bullet).
