The .40S&W cartridge offers a great balance between the 9x19mm cartridge and the .45ACP in terms of maintaining a reasonable magazine capacity in a 9mm size pistol, while providing a larger frontal bullet area than the 9x19mm Luger.
Due to the calibers wide acceptance in the law enforcement community, it is almost a surety to be able to find a bullet in this caliber that will both expand to a large diameter and penetrate to adequate distances.
