The 45-70 Government cartridge is commonly found in lever-action rifles and combines the effectiveness of a large-bore bullet with the velocity of a rifle. There are essentially two loads for this cartridge: a 'lever action' load and a higher pressure, 'strong action only' load.
This cartridge is very versatile in that game animals up to and including deer may be hunted with the 'lever action loads, while hard-cast, non-expanding bullets from the 'strong action' loads can be counted on for defensive usage against the largest bears. Propelling a 300gr 45-caliber bullet at 1900 ft/sec, the 45-70 can be expected to effectively stop all two- and four-legged predators on the North American continent.
