The 6.8mm Special Purpose Cartridge was introduced as a military/law enforcement replacement for the 5.56x45mm NATO (.223 Remington) cartridge fired by the M16 series of rifles. It is easily adaptable to any AR15 or M16 rifle with the replacement of a few parts, such as the barrel, magazine and bolt assembly.
The terminal effectiveness of this cartridge likely exceeds that of any 5.56x45mm NATO, but at the cost of a 15% reduction in magazine capacity. While this may be of concern to owners/users of fully automatic rifles, the difference between 25 or 30 cartridges held in a magazine should be of little importance in all but the most dire of circumstances.
