The .30-30 Winchester cartridge provides similar ballistics to the 7.62x39mm rifle. It is an excellent, lower recoil alternative to the heavier 30-caliber weapons such as the 7.62x51mm (308 Winchester) and has likely killed more medium-sized game animals than any other cartridge in North America. Lever-action rifles firing this cartridge can be purchased for a fraction of the cost of semi-auto military type rifles. The effectiveness of the cartridges are comparable despite the mundane looks of the 30-30 lever action rifle. Additionally, lever action rifles feature a smaller distance between the bore and the top of the front sight - you expose less of your head when firing from prone or over a barrier (if absolutely necessary.) We have no reservation in recommending the .30-30 lever action for self-defense.
