.308 Winchester

The .308 Winchester (7.62x51mm NATO) cartridge has been in use by NATO militaries since the late 1950’s and is well at home as a hard-hitting cartridge for machineguns, assault rifles and sniper rifles, as well as being a popular medium game hunting cartridge in the United States.

It’s pluses are that it is a rifle cartridge of moderate weight and size that has a (user– and weapon-dependant) minimum effective range of at least 600 meters.  Additionally, with the proper ammunition, a person armed with a .308 Winchester rifle can defend themselves against an armored fighting vehicle with moderate success.  With regular ball ammunition, this cartridge can defeat all soft body armor.

Among the drawbacks to the cartridge are the heavy recoil when fired from a lightweight rifle like the majority of sniper and assault rifles.  The assault rifles designed to fire the cartridge typically weigh in at 10lbs and subsequently require a moderate degree of physical fitness to fire effectively for any period of time.  Also, the larger cartridge limits the magazine capacity of any rifle—for a given box magazine size, the .308 Winchester magazine will hold approximately 33% less ammunition than a magazine of the same size, for a .223 Remington (5.56x45mm NATO) rifle.

Peace through suppressive fire.
