Originally appearing in 1872, the .45 Long Colt offers the opportunity to utilize a heavy 45 caliber handgun bullet at velocities significantly higher than a similar weight bullet in a .45ACP.  Loaded to pressures suitable for usage in firearms utilizing older design methods and metallurgy, it is a ballistic twin to a hot .45ACP.  Newer firearm designs like the Ruger Blackhawk series allow for this cartridge to be loaded to nearly .44 Magnum kinetic energy levels.  Firearms chambered for this caliber are in common usage and are readily available for purchase.
