Developed by US Army Frankford Arsenal, this cartridge is useful for long range precision shooting and perhaps also for big game hunting.  Against unarmored personnel, some cartridges have proven to be capable of enhanced effectiveness. 

As an anti-material rifle, the 50BMG is best considered to be a light cannon and can effectively disable UP TO BUT NOT INCLUDING modern APC vehicles.  Ball ammunition will easily defeat NIJ IV armor.
