Pistols are what are most commonly thought of when guns used for self-defense are considered.  The small size and light weight of most pistols make them ideal firearms to have available for this purpose, as most self-defense situations occur with little or no warning.

Unfortunately, these attributes are also what make handguns the least effective firearm type available.  When selecting a handgun, it is important to choose the handgun that is comfortable to carry, naturally aiming in your hand and that has the hardest recoil that you can comfortably control.  Minimizing as many of the drawbacks inherent to these weapon systems as possible and selecting proper ammunition for your chosen caliber will help to increase your chances of survival in situations where the use of deadly force is authorized.
