Rifles

                 Rifles are much like handguns in that they usually only fire a single projectile at a time, but they are different in that rifles fire much more effective ammunition that is oftentimes effective to ranges 10-20 times further than handgun bullets can be fired.  The high-velocity bullets fired by rifles can offer significant advantages in incapacitation of a hostile target and the neutralization of body armor.

           The price for this, of course, comes at the expense of increased recoil and overall size, when compared to handguns.  Because of the size and weight of rifles (the gun pictured above is 31” long and weighs around 5.2 pounds empty), they are not commonly available during most self-defense situations.  They are useful in shooting situations where a gun larger than a handgun can be used and a higher overall effectiveness (against unarmored targets and those wearing body armor) per shot is required.

“  By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
   Their flag to April's breeze unfurled;
   Here once the embattled farmers stood;
   And fired the shot heard round the world.
"

- Ralph Waldo Emerson
